Here are some images taken to compare the E1 and the E500 using the 14 - 54mm lens. Also is a comparison of the 14 - 54mm lens vs the 14 - 45mm kit lens using the E1. These are not strictly scientific tests but just a general comparison made under amateur studio conditions.

I don't find the comparison worthless, notwithstanding the comments of churlish other guest, who most likely had never done anything helpful for anyone else in his or her wretched life.
What would be most interesting would be photograph of crops of prints of stuff printed from the two cameras, with (a) more detail in them and (b) more untextured areas, that's where the rubber meets the road.

You're probably right. It was very difficult to keep identical conditions for both cameras down to the absolute identical white balance as well. However you can notice that there's not a huge difference between 5mp and 8mp in practise and that the more expensive ED lens is a little sharper.
