Demining in Iraq

Landmines are one of the most lethal and diabolical instruments of war.
They have the greatest impact after the battles have long ceased.
Millions of innocent people are maimed and killed each year by abondened mine fields.
The problem is compounded by the lack of maps and information on the minefields existence and locations.

To clear a minefield takes a long time. Due to the terrain of this region most minefields can only be cleared by hand. Only occassionally can dogs or machines be used. Due to the necessity to be thorough a man usually clears from 7 to 10 square metres of ground a day. It can take years to clear a field and declare it safe.
