Blending In, Shanghai, China, 2005

Some people might overlook the old woman in this picture because she appears to be so dark, small, quiet, and unimportant. She blends in with the laundry, which appears overwhelming. At first glance, she seems to almost become a towel, hanging on the line to dry. But if we take a closer and longer look, we will find her there, and realize that she was there long before that laundry went up, and will still be there long after it comes down.

****This image blew me away, Jen. You have so beautifully organized this image around the repeating rhythms of the hanging jackets that she seems to be imprinted on what seems to be another "hanging object," the old brick building behind her. At first glance, we seem to be looking at some laundry. And then we see her there in the darkness. Once we see her, we can't take our eyes off of her. Her ancient presence before that old brick bulding is haunting -- you have incongruously juxtaposed against the stuff of everyday life, most of which she will never use, and perhaps can not even see. She is overwhelmed by it all, and in saying this, you make a comment on aging that is very important. Will the world someday pass all of us by as it has her? What can we do to make sure it doesn't? This image haunts the imagination as much as any image you have ever made in terms of depth of expression.
