Icy Encounter, Summer Palace, Beijing, China, 2004

Frozen Kunming Lake draws brave visitors to test its ice. While many stay close to shore, this couple ventures to the middle of the ice. While this fellow offers loving support to the young woman, I got the feeling that she was not exactly comfortable with his idea. This image captures the difference between genders: men love adventure. Women want to be safe. Guess who prevails here?

I wanna send this picture as a New Year gift to Leo, I wish him a best 2005! :)

****This is remarkable use of abstraction, Jen, to tell a story. It is rich in scale incongruity, and shouts a very basic human value, loving support, at the viewer. The body language of the man and woman is universally understood. "Come with me" the strong man is saying. "Let me take you into this golden future." She is a bit hesitant. I sense her reluctance to go with him, but he is insistent and so strong and full of life and energy. How can she refuse? This is as good as any story-telling picture you have ever made, Jen. Every inch of it works-- the color, the backlighting, the golden context, the scale of the small figures compared to the vast golden sheet of ice. He may really be just a guy keeping a friend from slipping on the ice, but you are playing with our imaginations here, Jen. We are left to make up whatever story we want, and that is why this image works so well as expression.
