Cooking, Zhangjiagang, China, 2004

I abstracted the woman by using light and frame, drawing the eye into the steam. By doing so, I tried to make the picture convey a sense of place, and bring my viewers into the picture, helping them to both feel and smell this place.

I think this is some of the very best Black and White photography I have seen.

Very important detail that helps us understand better about this woman, thanks Tim for your wonderful eyes!
By the way, that is tofu!

I respond to the age and experience of the cook. She is cutting with a cleaver, through something (cheese? tofu?) directly into her hand. She has cooked for years and knows just how to use her tools.

Marek says it perfectly, Jen. A sense of place means that you've put some things in this image that are unique to this particular scene and then memorably emphasized them. You abstract this person with light and frame, drawing our eyes into the steam that rises from the food. As the cook slices, you make us smell, and we can almost imagine the pungent odor rising from those onions, right. Our eyes begin to tear and its time to leave. But we shall always recall this place, because of how you have shown it to us here. Once again, this image becomes clear in black and white. Its message never came through in this way when I saw it in sepia.

Wonderful light and composition. A real sense of place with a striking arrangement.
