I have just found this image of Hefei, as I am visiting the city shortly.
Yes this photograph does work well in presenting a view of new China framed by and from the old. There is, however, a strength to this image that no one has mentioned yet, that has to do with old and new China. This is to be found in the diagonals of the composition, namely the roof at the top right and the more subtle diagonal in the cloud pattern. They are suggestive of traditional Chinese landscape composition, which is marked by a strong diagonal and an obscured section at about the middle to back section of the image. The angles in this photograph support the already stated idea that we can see China lurching forward, and perhaps, toward the west, as what would once have been a strong diagonal composition is now tending, almost curving as we look at the photograph, toward a more gridied format, that defines traditional western landscape composition.

You are right, as usual, Jen. With that sickly green tone out of there, this would be a three star picture in black and white. I should have noted that for you when I graded it, but obviously forgot. Sorry.

Phil, I think I made a point here by looking out traditional building to show a new China, and I like the composition also. I think it should be a 3 star photo, can you tell me your reason for rating it as a average picture? Is the problem with the tone or else?

Yes, Jen, I saw it too -- the contrast between the China of yesterday and today is very apparent in this image. You don't have to show a lot of the Old China here either. The reference to tradition is abstract and embraces the image top and bottom, and puts the viewer, as you've said, in your shoes --looking out over the city. This is a theme that appears and reappears in your work, Jen, and it is certainly valid. China is changing so fast that I could not believe my eyes when I visited your country earlier this year. I made that very same point athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/33923616

I like your photos. A normal city in China always looks so beautiful in your pictures. Very nice frame and tone.

Beautiful B&W, Jenny, Love the contrast as well as the tonal range!
Lots of details and great framing!

Leo. In fact, I think that's just what I was looking for in this pictures. It keeps a balance of the picuture and tells something about where I was standing in..Tranditional buildings and modern duildings made the contrast. :))
