Bark, Vancouver, Canada, 2003

I love texture. I could feel this picture in my fingers before I even took it. Once I made this picture, it became more than just a piece of tree bark to me. It speaks of time, of life's imperfections. The more I look at, the more it makes me think and wonder. And that is what abstract photographs should do -- excite the imagination.

Tree bark you say...
Well, I have to confess that I cannot see it. I don't see wood at all, I see metal!! I was really surprised when I read you note :))
I guess that's the beauty of an abstraction, when reality loses itself in the magic of an image...
Great shot Jennifer.

I have been a huge fan of your street photography and in particular many of your images made in China. These abstractions are truly amazing and this one in particular leaves me speechless. Keep up the terrific work!

Life is beautiful because we suffer, isn't than ironic too ? Beautiful because along our way we get some scars. This tree is full of them and that is what makes it so interesting.
I'm very attracted to it.

I strongly agree to put this in your abstraction gallery.

****A breathtaking abstraction, Jen -- it demands our attention, and its textures call upon us to touch it. The abstraction itself has created great incongruity. It is one of those "what is it?" pictures -- it catches us unawares and slams into our imagination with great force. The black forms within this bark remind me of a community. Leaders and followers, adults and children. Those on the periphery wither and die. You have created another metaphor for life here, Jen. And you do it very, very well. This could also be just as effective in your abstraction gallery because it does what pure abstractions do best -- stimulate our imaginations and trigger our thoughts.

whitewater and driving and chaos and the haze between the valley crests as the morning before autumn calls for winter to fall....
