Greenland 2011

Our visit to Greenland is to see the icebergs and we are not disappointed.

We spent a week (August 4 - August 12) in the town of Ilulissat which is located 250km north of the Arctic Circle in the west coast of Greenland. In Greenlandic, Ilulissat means iceberg as the town is located at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord where calving ice from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier enter the sea. The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier is one of the most active glaciers in the northern hemisphere as more than 35 cubic km of ice is produced every year. In recognition of its scenic beauty and importance in glaciological study, the Ilulissat Icefjord was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 2004.
