Controversial, since many Australians consider the road to be a scar and an intrusion into what is a sacred site. That Anzac Cove is something that should be left as it was when the troops first landed. That it shouldn't be easy just to drive to this beach - you should walk and struggle down. That the road belittles, somehow trivializes, just how difficult it was for the troops.
I, as an Aussie, personally believe the road is a good thing. Whilst it does scar the landscape somewhat, it's not too bad. And it makes the landing beaches far more accessible for all. Before the road was cut, many elderly and youngsters would have struggled. However now anyone can get down to the beach, stand on the stones, in the water and try visualizing what it would have been like here back then. The cemeteries are so much easier to reach also. It is very moving to stand at water's edge, listening to the lap of the waves, looking up at the cliffs and just quietly remember. And with this road, anyone can do that.
