Desmond Leslie Mitchell is wearing the epaulettes of a Squadron Leader promotion to which came in July 1967. So, he was pretty new in the post and probably struggling a bit with the responsibility; especially for a newly promoted 46 year old.

Dad on exercise in north east Thailand on the Vietnam border in 1967. This was a joint services and multi-allies exercise with Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians; etc. They could hear the bombing across the border.
