Sostra - Roman Fortress

Sostra is near the village of Lomec (Lomets), which is on the Lovech-Troyan road, but in ancient Roman times it was on the Dunabe River to Philippopolis road known as 'Via traiana'. (Dunabe River to Plovdiv, via the Troyan passage.) AD 147 - The construction of the first stone walls of Sostra fortress started on the orders of Roman Emperor Antonius Pius. AD 249 - Sostra was captured and looted by the Goths. Soon after - Sosta is re-captured by the Romans and the fortress expanded and strengthened. Later, Sostra was again captured and burned down by the Goths. New tribes occupy the area and a small village is started, but at the end of the 5th century the Huns destroyed Sostra once again and for all.
In 19th century a small Inn was opened near by, which later became Lomeshki Hancheta. The Lovech-Troyan railway track passes right trough the middle of the archeological remains. Some of the original Sostra walls and towers were restored or re-created in recent years, thanks to Municipality and Rotary Club of Troyan. For more info check: www.sostra.troyanmuseum.com
