Old Town San Diego
Retains an "old" look thanks to the California Park Service. At one time this was "The City" and 650 people lived here.
The downtown moved to the south in 1871 to its present location and this area became more or less abandoned until it became a state park in 1970.
The Park Service has brought in outside contractors to manage the park, all of them with their own vision and all of them controversial.
Still it is a popular tourist destination with dozens of bars, restaurants, shops and galleries as well as "historical demonstrations".
On a quiet morning, like today, it is a pleasant place to walk around before the crowds arrive.
