Stadtkirche = City Church. This term was used when a church was not dedicated to a particular saint, though this church is associated with the Virgin Mary.
The original church was built in 1003, and rebuilt in 1296 after a fire.
It was altered to a Gothic Revival Style 1884-1889.
On February 23, 1945 it was heavily damaged by bombs. The restoration was not completed until 1985.
