While in Iquitos Peru(2006), my work with Zoo Peru also included an educational aspect. Roland, the liaison between Zoo Peru and the local government,began making plans to teach English to the people in villages along the Amazon. On this particular day we took a bus about 45 minutes outside of town. Getting off at a sign that read "Rural School, Nueva Esperanza" (New Hope) we walked 4 km. on a path thru the jungle to this little village. There we found the school, introduced ourselves and talked with the kids. Roland went first telling them his plans to teach them English, then I spoke with Roland translating. I told them how beautiful the forest surrounding their village is and how I wanted to share that with others in America. I also tried to relate to them what a resource it is. While Roland and I spoke to these kids we were met with blank, emotionless faces. So I said lets all stand up and get into a circle. My intent was to share yoga with them in a way that would help foster greater connection with the forest and the animals that live there. They loved it. As you can see by there smiles, it was precious. Realizing the impact of this one small experience, I hope to return and share again this gift of yoga.
