WINNER : TRAVEL/YPRES/IEPER JUN 09/AROUND YPRES TOWN CENTRE GALLERY
The imposing Cloth Hall was built in the 13th century and was one of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages. During the First World War it was completely destroyed, except for the lower portion of the belfry and a few pieces of wall of the west wing. The structure which stands today is the exact copy of the original medieval building, rebuilt after the war. The belfry houses a 49-bell carillon, and the In Flanders Fields Museum is housed on the first floor.
The town hall, facing the front in this picture, was also rebuilt. It was originally constructed in 1619 against the east wall of the cloth hall, and has a gothic arcade.
The whole complex, in the market square, was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
Rising behind these buildings is St Martins Cathedral which was originally built in 1221, and also completely reconstructed after WWI

St. Pancras, the parish church in Telfes.
The original church was built around 1344. After a fire in 1593 burnt down the original steeple, another one was built in 1626 and it still stands today. The present large building was constructed around this tower in the mid 18th century. Its interior is decorated with beautiful large-scale ceiling frescoes by the Tyrolean artist Anton Zoller. He was also responsible for the exterior painted decorations which include a fresco of St. Pancras over the rear entrance and the framing of the sundial on the south facade. At a side altar in a glass shrine is the relic of a 6th century Tunisian bishop and controversial theologian, Fecundus, who died in exile in Europe in 570. The large organ was built in 1865.

EARLY MORNING VRIJDAGMARKT SQUARE
This is one of Ghent's oldest squares in the city, and has played a major role in its history.
Here was where most of Ghent's public political and social life took place. Since 1199 the weekly market has been held here on Friday mornings, hence its given name. It was here that kings, princes and other dignitaries were solemnly received, feasts celebrated, riots fought and feuds settled, and it was also the scene of many executions. Most of the buildings surrounding the square are old guild houses dating from the 18th century, apart from a 15th-century tanners' guild hall of the tanners and the huge 20th century Bond Moyson socialist house of the people.
It is today still is a busy meeting place with cafes and their outdoor terraces surrounding the large market square.

A JOHN LENNON WALL . 1 583
When John Lennon was murdered in 1980 he became a hero to some and his picture was painted on this wall.
The threat of prison couldn’t keep people from slipping there at night to scrawl graffiti first in the form of Beatles lyrics and odes to Lennon, then they came to paint their own feelings on the wall. The Communist police tried repeatedly to whitewash over the portrait and messages, but they could never manage to keep the wall clean. It used to be covered in anti-Communist graffiti, now it is covered in messages of love and peace. The original portrait of Lennon is long lost under the layers of new paints but if you look hard enough you can still find tributes to Lennon and a yellow submarine!
The wall, at Velkoprevorske Namesti, Mala Strana, is owned by the Knights of the Maltese Cross, who allow the graffiti to continue.

RIVERBED NIGHTSHOT
The three rivers that flow down from the mountains and through central Funchal are barely trickling streams during good weather, which is, of course almost all year round. They are all covered with bougainvilleas that contribute much colour to the city.
However they become raging torrents after the monsoon type rain that can occur in the winter months, even though the average temperature is around 16 degrees C. Flooding in 1803 killed 600 people, soon after which the river walls were then heightened. Yet when ten inches of rain fell in 48 hours on 29th October 1993 the rivers still couldn't cope and overflowed, cutting Funchal sea front off with mud and debris and several people lost their lives.

THE ILLUMINATED TOWN HALL
In the early 16th century Antwerp was a busy port and city. Its authorities wished to replace the existing small medieval town hall with a more imposing structure reflecting its great prosperity. However the threat of war prevented progress on this. The materials intended for the town hall were instead used to shore up the city defences. Then about 1560 new plans were developed in the new Renaissance style. Completed in 1565, it was soon badly burnt in 1576, but was restored three years later.

Less than fifty years afterwards in 1536, this tower was struck by lightning and part of it burned down. It was then replaced by a low steeple. This steeple was also damaged by lightning in 1872. It was only then that the present steeple was built to a height of 109 metres, making it the second highest in Holland.

GRASLEI
Ghent's former main port as well as a major trade centre for grain, right in the middle of the city on the banks of the river of Scheldt. The long row of beautiful buildings on Graslei all have different architectural styles, and are former guildhalls and warehouses of grain traders, and reflect the wealth and power of the city in past times. They were built along the canal between 1200 and 1600. One is the Grain Warehouse that is the oldest step gable house in the world, and dates from 1200. Graslei actually means 'street of herbs and vegetables', and the Koornlei, which is on the opposite bank, stands for 'street of wheat'. Both names indicate that these products were originally traded and stored there.

Paul Maassen Bronze Statue
He was a travelling merchant selling haberdashery out of his basket in Monschau & the Aachen area. Very popular with the Monschau women because he always had a nice tale to tell. They bought something from him, even if they did not really need anything at the time. He was born in 1856 and died aged 84 in 1940. This statue was installed in 2000.

A HOHENWERFEN FORTRESS . 2 2545
WINNER : Hohenwerfen Fortress & Werfen Village/Austria & Germany 07/Travel gallery
Towers on a high rock outcrop immediately above the Salzach river and the village of Werfen.
Originally built in the 11th century to guard the Lueg Pass just to the north, it was the seat of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg for 500 years, and served also as a court and prison. Additions were made to it in the 12th century, in the 16th after damage by rioting farmers & miners of the region and finally in the 17th during the 30 Years War. After 200 years of neglect under Bavarian rule, it was renovated in the 19th century by the Austrian Archdukes. In 1931 it was severely damaged by a fire, but was renovated within a year.
Since 1938 it has been a police training camp and a youth hostel, before becoming the tourist attraction it is today. It featured as the Schloss Adler where much of the action took place in the 1968 film 'Where Eagles Dare', although the cablecar scenes were shot elsewhere in Austria, in Ebensee.

Polperro harbour is unusual as it is privately owned by the Council Tax payers of the village. In 1894, an Act of Parliament sanctioned by Queen Victoria formed the Trustees of Polperro Harbour. They were the 15 eminent men of the village who bought the harbour rights. This Trust has continued down the years to the current residents.

KALVERSTEEG LANE
In Patershol, an atmospheric old neighbourhood in Ghent that still has its closed street pattern from the Middle Ages. The Lys Canal forms a natural border for it from the rest of the old city centre. In past centuries it originally housed the city's tradesmen and artisans. With more industrialization at the beginning of the 19th century many workers went live in Patershol, and many of the larger buildings were divided into smaller residences. At the end of that century the workers moved to the growing Ghent suburbs, and Patershol became neglected and shabby right up to the 1970s. Then as university students seeking cheap accommodation started to move into the area, extensive renovations began.
The district today is a charming web of twisting cobbled lanes, houses and many small cozy cafes and restaurants, many of which retain their original medieval structures. In 1981 the Patershol area became a protected townscape.
