PREHISTORIC COPPER MINE
Uncovered in 1987 on Llandudno's Great Orme, the copper mines discovered are one of the most astounding archaeological discoveries of recent times. Dating back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age they increased our knowledge about the ancient Britons and their civilized, structured society that existed 2,000 years before the Roman invasion.
Over the past 28 years mining engineers, cavers and archaeologists have been slowly uncovering tunnels and large areas of the surface landscape to reveal what is now thought to be the largest prehistoric mine, so far discovered in the world.

A ST BOTOLPH'S CHURCH 603
The village of Botolphs has fewer than 60 residents and is on the South Downs Way, but this large church gives away the fact that in earlier times this was a thriving port on the nearby River Adur.
Built in 950, St Botolph’s is a fine Saxon church
Around 1250, a north aisle was erected, and the tower added. However, as the river silted up and changed its course, the little town declined, and around 1450 the north aisle was demolished and the north wall closed up. Three bells dating from 1536 still ring out from the tower, hanging in their original wooden frame.

THE REDUNDANT LITTLE CHURCH
WINNER : SUSSEX-MY LOCALITY/WARMINGHURST GALLERY
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre which was made redundant in 1979.
This isolated church is now cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust, a simple sandstone building built at the end of a lane, near Ashington, in about 1220. Its bell, cast in about 1200, is one of the oldest survivors in Sussex.
Unlike many ancient churches in Sussex, it was not restored in the 19th century, and its interior has been called the finest example in Sussex of how many must have looked before the Victorian restorers. It is now a Grade I listed building for its architectural and historical importance.

PENDEAN FARMHOUSE
From West Lavington near Midhurst, West Sussex started as a small yeoman farmhouse built in 1609.
It was converted into two cottages in the late 18th or early 19th century, but has been rebuilt at Singleton as it was first designed. The building demonstrates the revolution in house interiors which took place in the 16th century.... the abandonment of the open hall in favour of upstairs and downstairs rooms heated by a massive central chimney. The transition from medieval to modern is shown by the retention of medieval features such as unglazed windows, upper rooms still open to the rafters, and the use of wattle and daub for interior partitions and upper panels of the outside walls. In contrast, the chimney appears a sophisticated construction.
The farmhouse was dismantled in 1968 and reconstructed at Singleton in 1976.

STOPHAM BRIDGE
WINNER : My Locality/Coates Area Gallery
On the river Arun near Pulborough, it was built in 1423 in place of an early fourteenth century wooden bridge. A large and solid structure, however during the Civil War one arch was destroyed which was replaced by a drawbridge until repairs restored the arch in the late 1600s. The central arch was raised in 1822 to allow the passage of higher barges. The bridge suffered much damage during WWII, when heavy army vehicles passed over it, and was further damaged by lorries in the following decades. It is only 12 ft wide, so often created a bottleneck on the road. A new bridge for traffic was finally built a few yards upstream in 1986, and pedestrians no longer have to retreat into the recesses over the piers to avoid vehicles.

ST RICHARD'S GATE
The door leading from the churchyard through the walls of Amberley Castle.....named after the Bishop it was made for.
After the Norman invasion the Bishops of Chichester made Amberley one of their palaces. Earlier buildings which served as a Manor House were enclosed by a wall in the late 14th Century, intended to safeguard the Bishop from the surrounding peasants. The licence to crenellate......literally, permission to build battlemented walls..... was granted in December 1377, just before the Peasants' Revolt.
Contrary to suggestions, Amberley escaped much of the bloodshed and chaos of the Civil War, although there were several cavalry skirmishes on the nearby South Downs. The then occupant of Amberley Castle, John Goring, was a notorious Royalist and after Parliament's capture of Arundel, soldiers were sent to Amberley to seek payment of back taxes he owed. No doubt it was them who wrecked much of the buildings inside the Castle. Parliament then seized Amberley Castle in 1648 and sold it for £3,341 14s 4d to a London merchant.
It is currently a luxurious hotel.

CANNON STREET RAILWAY BRIDGE
This bridge carries trains over the River Thames into the previously magnificent Victorian Cannon Street station on the north bank. It was opened in 1866 after three years of construction, but has been much widened and renovated since then, with most of its ornamental features being removed and therefore it is now has a more basic appearance. Similarly the railway station, although the two original towers remain.
It was the scene of a disaster in 1989. 51 people lost their lives when the pleasure boat Marchioness sank after being run down by a dredger.

CLINK PRISON ENTRANCE
REALLY SPOOKY!!!! CHECK THE 'ORBS' IN THIS IMAGE. I CAN SEE AT LEAST 5 OF VARYING SIZES. Taken just inside the entrance, and there had been no rain or mist, no leaking ceiling, and no sweating! I know there is a lot of debate as to what these orbs are, but there is a theory they denote the presence of ghosts. Now read on please....if you dare!
WHAT has been left behind from the suffering, pain and neglect of the thousands of inmates? Many visitors have heard and seen a variety of strange things, from people walking through walls, dogs running through the museum and many more. There have been over fifty reports of a lady sitting playing with chains in one corner of the museum.
Paranormal investigations are ongoing at the site. Previous investigators have found it to be very active with many strange happenings from glasses smashing, lights turning on and off, doors opening and closing, and many other unexplained events.
There is another orb on another image of a torture chair. I only took 3 shots inside this place (unusual).....although I did not have this paranormal information at the time, I did not feel like lingering in there at all, yet I am not of a nervous or phobic disposition.
The museum is built upon the original site of the notorious Clink Prison. The prison dates back to 1144 making it one of England’s oldest, if not the oldest prison. It functioned until 1780 when it was burnt down by rioters, and was never rebuilt. The name, derived from the sound of the prison's doors being bolted and the rattling of the prisoner's chains, has become slang as a term for prison or jail cell.
Life was very harsh inside the prison. Fighting, murders, starvation, brutal tortures and executions were common. Poorer prisoners had to beg at the grates on the street level and sell anything they had, including their clothes, to pay for food. Those with money and friends on the outside were able to pay the jailers to make their time better. The museum houses original artefacts of crime and punishment from this prison, and others in the UK.

THE ICONIC TOWER BRIDGE
It took 8 years, between 1886-1894, and 432 construction workers to build Tower Bridge.
Originally the only crossing over the Thames was London Bridge. More bridges were added over the centuries as London grew, although these were all west of London Bridge, since the area east of it had become a busy port.
In the 19th century London's East End became heavily populated and need mounted for a new bridge east of London Bridge, as road journeys south from the area were being delayed by hours. This could not be a fixed bridge because it would not accommodate access by tall-masted ships to the port facilities between London Bridge and the Tower of London.
Therefore the chosen design for Tower Bridge incorporated a tower at each end of the central span split into two equal halves which could be raised to allow river traffic through. The raising mechanism was originally powered by steam but since 1976 it has been driven by oil and electricity.
The bridge originally had high-level open air walkways between the towers above the central span, which could still be crossed when the bridge was raised. However, they became regularly frequented by undesirables, and in 1910 they were closed due to lack of use. Also, many people arriving at the bridge when raised preferred to wait at street level rather than climbing up the stairs often carrying heavy loads. In 1982,as part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition area, the walkways were reopened to the public, now fully enclosed. In 2014 a 11 metres long glass floor was installed in one walkway, 42 metres above the river.
Tower Bridge is now crossed by over 40,000 pedestrians, cycles and vehicles every day. It is raised around 1000 times a year. The river traffic is now much reduced, but it still takes priority over the road traffic.
