This bridge carries trains over the River Thames into the previously magnificent Victorian Cannon Street station on the north bank. It was opened in 1866 after three years of construction, but has been much widened and renovated since then, with most of its ornamental features being removed and therefore it is now has a more basic appearance. Similarly the railway station, although the two original towers remain.
It was the scene of a disaster in 1989. 51 people lost their lives when the pleasure boat Marchioness sank after being run down by a dredger.
