A 5 MAR 10

Shoreham - West Sussex

The ramparts at the remains of old Shoreham Fort, located at the port, by the mouth of the River Adur and on the beach which is now a nature reserve.
Built in 1857 as artillery forts were then seen as the answer to any potential invasion to the English south coast from the advancing technological period's new stronger and faster battleships. It had 5 cannons, but they quickly became obsolete in comparison to the performance of the more modern artillery soon being produced in Europe.
However, the fort's guns never were needed to fire in anger, and in the early 20th century it was abandoned. Instead it became in 1914 the first film studio in West Sussex, the Sunny South Film Company, due to the area's good natural light.
