I've been told that red paint was easier to make, so larger buildings were painted red. There's an old farm house at the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown, NY that is restored and was found that the front and sides of the house (which company would see when coming to visit) were painted white, the back was painted red because red paint was cheaper, and no one would see it. An interesting story, if nothing else...and your photo is GORGEOUS!! I love it!
