Falaknuma Palace

Falaknuma Palace is one of the 35 palaces which King Nizam of Hyderabad owned. Once the richest man in the world, he had hosted gusts such as Kind George V, Queen Mary and Queen Victoria in this very palace. It is shaped in the form of a scorpion in representing his zodiac sign.

The Falaknuma Palace has 132 rooms with a private wing that is used as a hotel. Inside, it is a whole world of luxury - made of 32 kinds of Italian marble, 10 types of leather and many types of wood. It has the longest dining table what seats 120 and a ballroom with a jade collection estimated at US$120m. The palace is so lavish, even the handles to the wardrobes are made out of crystal. As this is one of the many palaces he owned, it is believed the dining and ballroom has only been used 4 times.

If we belive there is heaven on the sky I would say falaknuma palace is heaven on the earth. I have been visited several times and always feel that I born to see this real heaven which we can see before die.

the palace is actually a hotel now. it's been refurbished by the taj group and is now a 7-star hotel. i am not sure if it's open to public just for visiting, but i tell you, it's worth a try if you're already in hyderabad!

It is an excellent palance, it's like a heaven in HYDERABAD, situated in heart of the city which consits of 32 acres of land from there entire hyderabad is visible clearly. I appreciate TAJ as taken measures to continue to keep this monument ALIVE in hyderabad and maintaining the standards.

For all the ppl showin der disappointment abt Falaknuma been given to Taj hotel. I'm sure all wud agree dat atleast dis way, it wil be preserved n retain its grandeur which could never b d case if it wud b under d Govn. jus look at d condition of r so-called rich monuments. Ppl spit n carve n throw rubbish. Atleast now hyderabad can boast of a palace which is actually in d state of a beautiful nd unique palace rather than ppl sayin dat this "WAS A PALACE".. ppl n govn lack civic sense, alteast now dis amazing monument with rich old tradition and history is restored!! I'v been here, and its blissful!!!

Aah ! I am a Hyderabadi and spent my childhood in a huge palace.. where one room could accomodate atleast 400-500 persons. Well.. that was in the 1970-80s. In 2008... its a small bungalow / an apartment...with photos of our childhood in frames (initially silver.. later wooden.. and even later : plastic). I have not seen Falaknuma. How can a commoner like me enter Falaknuma. I hope Taj renovates it... sooner the better.. so i can take a taxi.. spend money.. go inside the lobby.. and have a look. The Nizams can NOT maintain it anymore. Mukarram Jah Bahadur (Nizam VII) is bankrupt... (asset-rich / cash-poor syndrome). The Madrasis live in small homes (2 rooms), but always go for cash... In caseof Hyderabadis it is the opposite.

So, Taj Group... please renovate it A.S.A.P.... so that i may have a look around 2008 or 2009. Atleast courtesy the Hotel, the area will develop.. some basic infrastructure (roads/water supply) will improve.. cuz in the old city (Real Hyderabad)., subsequent Governments of Andhra Pradesh - consistently abandoned it.. and left it to God... Roads / Water Supply / Electric Supply ... The Government made speeches... but ground reality remained the same as it was in 1948. There is a deliberate attempt to keep the Old City un-developed... Make sure that it NEVER progresses...

I born and brought up in Falaknuma, I have spent most of my leisure time in palace playing cricket, romaing on hill with all hidden activities like smoking, dating.

I visited hyderabad in this month (12-20-2009) & try to see the falaknuma place but the security person said the falaknuma palace was banned for public viewing. Is that true? or need permission from whom visiting the palace.

The palace was built by the one of the Nizam's Muqtadars (military Fief). The palace was gifted to the Nizam's after he stayed there one night and in exchange the Nizam extended the Muqtadar's Fiefdom to include what are now part's of Secunderabad (Hyderabad's adjacent city which was then called Lashkar (Lashkar means military battalion) since the Muqtadar's use to keep their forces there for the protection of Nizam's State.

I was recently ( 2004 - 2006 ) involved in the planning and preparation work for the Palace refurbishment and unfortunately have to disagree with some of the posted comments. I carried out a number of surveys and investigations on the property and found that although the main building ( as shown in the photos ) looks ok it has many structural problems and is starting to leak like a sieve. The remaining buildings i.e. Bungalow, Zahini Mahal etc. have other problems varying from major roof failure to complete collapse. Major investment is needed as for many, many years the Palace has been neglected. It is evident that it was a very special place once and you can only hope that any restoration will be carried out sympathetically.

I lived in Hyderabad for 11 years, and I do have memories of visiting the Falaknuma Palace when it was open to the public sometime during the 1990's....I recently started reading about it again and came across news bits of how Falaknuma will be taken up by the Taj Group and will be made into a hotel. I must say I'm very upset about this. Why can't the government keep this exquisite piece of history and open it to the public, to educate locals as well as tourists of Hyderabad's rich culture. It bothers me to see how the governement cannot preserve these historical monuments that define glorious Hyderabad. I always dreamed of taking my children to Hyderabad and show them my beautiful city, its rich culture and heritage....but if industries like Taj take over, I'm afrain not much will be left.
What is the reasoning behind transforming it into a hotel, except the $$$$ factor??!
I understand that if one wants to see it, they can rent a room,....well, what about those families/people that can't afford to do that? Do they never get to see the interiors of this beautiful palace?
The Government needs to make better choices when bombarded with industrial money-making strategies.
I would'nt be surprised if one fine day the government decides to give away the Taj Mahal or the other historical palaces to the Taj group.

Also on that page you will find some recent photos of Falaknuma Palace taken in April 2008. You can see the construction work going on there (they are building a new wing I think). I spoke to a man at the Taj Krisha Hotel, he said the Falaknuma will probably open as a hotel end of this year. In the meantime, it's completely off limits to the public.

I'm sure they will restore it beautifully, if the other palace hotels under their management are anything to go by.

I wish the Govt. of India could have acquired Falak Numa Palace... and turned it into an Institue of Persian Studies... with a huge grant... that would have attracted tourists from the world.. but the Government has a myopic vision... and somehow there is no real desire to preserve anything that is attached to a Muslim Past... Let it fall apart... so that we can build a temple / apartment complex there.. thats the mindset. Anyways... Taj Hotel is better than Ruins.. so good luck Taj Group.

Aah ! I am a Hyderabadi and spent my childhood in a huge palace.. where one room could accomodate atleast 400-500 persons. Well.. that was in the 1970-80s. In 2008... its a small bungalow / an apartment...with photos of our childhood in frames (initially silver.. later wooden.. and even later : plastic). I have not seen Falaknuma. How can a commoner like me enter Falaknuma. I hope Taj renovates it... sooner the better.. so i can take a taxi.. spend money.. go inside the lobby.. and have a look. The Nizams can NOT maintain it anymore. Mukarram Jah Bahadur (Nizam VII) is bankrupt... (asset-rich / cash-poor syndrome). The Madrasis live in small homes (2 rooms), but always go for cash... In caseof Hyderabadis it is the opposite.

So, Taj Group... please renovate it A.S.A.P.... so that i may have a look around 2008 or 2009. Atleast courtesy the Hotel, the area will develop.. some basic infrastructure (roads/water supply) will improve.. cuz in the old city (Real Hyderabad)., subsequent Governments of Andhra Pradesh - consistently abandoned it.. and left it to God... Roads / Water Supply / Electric Supply ... The Government made speeches... but ground reality remained the same as it was in 1948. There is a deliberate attempt to keep the Old City un-developed... Make sure that it NEVER progresses...

I am a resident of old city hyderabad, the palace is yet to start as renovation works are still going on.. I feel it will take another year for completions as their are many legal hurdles coming in the way of renovation, as falaknuma is a heritage strucuture and it is the property of the nizam family who are fighting for their share...! But still its open for functions to be held in its lawns...

Kiran - When I was there in mid-2006, it was being renovated by the Taj group with plans for it to turn into a luxury hotel. Not sure if it already has.

Pragati. It's true the palace has been closed to visitors for some years though, but the good part is nothing's damaged inside because of that. I'm afraid you will have to wait a while more. The Taj group of hotels had just leased it and will be turning it into a 7-star hotel. I am unsure when it will actually be open for business though, but the price will be around US$1500 per night. We were quite lucky back then as we were hosted by The Taj, so we did get a 2 hour walkabout inside - something extremely marvelous!

I was visiting the palace as we had an event staged there. I do not believe it is open to public, but if it's any help, the palace is now leased by the Taj Hotels group. Perhaps you can try your luck contacting someone from their hotel in Hyderabad. Even if you can't go in, a visit to the grounds is worth it. Good luck!
