Definition C: A public display of a message.

"Writing graffiti is about the most honest way you can be an artist. It takes no money to do it, you don't need an education to understand it and there's no admission fee"

The term Graffiti originally referred to 'those marks found on ancient Roman architecture'(however) the term is now associated with the twentieth century urban environment, where it covers anything from simple marks to complex and colourful compositions.

Both of these groups of photographs demonstrate public signs of individual identity, however I have separated these examples of public displays of a message into two groups. C1 depicts examples of the more recognized form of modern graffiti, as opposed to C2 that shows examples of the original and most simple form of graffiti. Both examples of mark making, leaving ones name in the environment are embedded in history, dating back to the names of gladiators accompanied by symbols and pictures which were scratched into the walls on the excavated buildings of Pompeii.
