In the fishmarket, Colaba, Mumbai

This may be as close to the southern tip of Mumbai as I'm going to get. The area has high security as already there was a substantial military/naval presence here; and then the attackers of late 2008 used the tip of Colaba as part of the staging post for their assault; at which point things tightened up. Movement is somewhat restricted and photography more so.

Because of the security I was unable to take photographs of fishing boats: signs and a guard warned me off.

More interesting by far, however, was the interior of this shed in which fish were being moved from trucks to iced piles. The smell was astonishing (and lingered on me until I got home and showered) and my presence prompted a near-riot: women trying to kick me out, others encouraging me to take photographs, kids (who were working there, wearing thick gloves to carry fish) grabbing at me and demanding photos and money and fighting with one another, men generally just checking things out, a slippery floor and little light... Never threatening but damn hard to take photographs in and clearly (again) I was intruding. They all had a job to do and almost nothing was getting done while I was hanging around.

This sounds like a rather frightening place to be, you can see a hint of menace from the two in the foreground but then there is laughing in the background. It is such a great shot of street life, so much going on, so much action, I think it is a fantastic shot full of life and vibrancy, absolutely brilliant.
