Loldia House on the shoreline of Lake Naivasha, was built in 1906 by JD Hopcraft for his wife Emmeline, after trekking with an ox cart from South Africa following the end of the Boer War. 'Loldia' meaning 'place of wild dogs' was rebuilt (as it stands now) in 1947 by Italian prisoners of war with the interior courtyard positioned to frame Mount Longonot across the lake. Three generations of Hopcraft's lived in the house on the 6,500 acre farm, before moving to another house on the estate 14 years ago. The House has since been leased to Governors camps to run as a Lodge, where guests can participate in fishing, climbing, hiking, horse riding, safari game drives and lake cruises. The furnishings are still the same and family portraits of the Hopcrafts can still be seen on the walls.
The immaculate lawns and gardens to the front of the house are host to Hippo, Buffalo, gazelle and even leopard. The host is a lovely man called Peter Njoroge who was described by British Country Life magazine as probably the best Butler in the world. They are not far wrong!!
