However, finding Bramble Cay is not easy because one can only see it a few miles away and if has been raining heavily in the mountains of New Guinea, there will be a strong current coming out of the Fly River pushing us as much a 30 miles to the south. But, if it has been dry in the mountains and the trades have been blowing strong, there could be a north flowing current. On top of that if you miss Bramble Cay there are submerged reefs a few miles to the south and shallow reefs just to the north. So it is imperative that ones navigation be spot on. We took celestial fixes about every two hours and kept checking them with Skylark’s fixes.
