Great Escape 1987

This is the slide show that my father put together after our 3 1/2 year long circumnavigation on our Valliant 40, named Tamure. We left in September of 1987 and returned in 1991, traveling east to west. The "script" for the slide show is in my Dad's words and is virtually the same as he tells it when he gives the show live.

Hi Alex by coincidence i stumbled over your beautyful slideshow of Tamure`s cicumnavigation. i enjoyed it very much as the pictures touched memorys to a likely journey my wife maria and i did from 1984-1990. i remembered immediatly meeting TAMURE and its crew in spring 1990 on some anchorage in the red sea as well later on in Larnaca-Marina, participating some events there in order to find out the best of the cyprus-wines and having a good time together. please give my best regards to Kitty and Scott hoping they are still well as in the meantime we all grew a bit older. I'm a friend of Bud Broda's and out of curiosity was looking at his FB friends and stumbled on your slide show. I too love sailing and am so enchanted with your journey. What a wonderful experience. I love your warm thoughtful narrative. I'm hoping that someday I too can make such a trip.

Hey Alex, Your Mom and Dad just gave me the link to your site here and I thouroughly enjoyed reading your narrative and seeing your pictures. Scott & Kitty gave me my first taste of offshore sailing back in 1975 right after their first circumnavigation. I was a sailing instructor at Longshore Sailing School at the time and was so enthralled by their adventure, I introduced myself and offered to help with the work on the boat. In return', that Fall they invited me to sail with them on the first leg of their trip down to St Thomas. I only accompanied them as far as Cape May since I was in school at NYU and could only spend the weekend. It was freezing cold and so windy that it took us hours to make our way the last couple of miles into the Cape May Harbor. We were freezing cold, thoroughly drenched through, and exhausted butit was the best experience of my life; my first time offshore, and I was hooked!!! The following summer I got a call from them. They were heading back to the States and wanted to know if I'd like to accompany them. The decision to do so took about a micro-second to make. I was on my way to St Thomas the very next day. Even though that voyage was over thirty years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. It was so inspiring spending a week with your Mom and Dad aborad Bebinka, and learning the ins and outs of offshore sailing. Your dad taught me celestial navigation and when I got my first accurate fix all on my own I was so proud! Later they introduced me to a man you probably knew, Herbert Lupke from Germany who had a 50 foot ketch, Nai-UT. I was offered the opportunity to help him sail it back to Germany from Boston. Another incredible adventure that wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Scott & Kitty! Anyway, reading your story and seeing these pictures was great and brought back a lot of those memories from 30 years ago. Thanks! Steve Turner

Truly amazing. i have just one word to describe this. Your dad is a very brave man and obviously he knws what he is doing. But Kudos to you all. I would say it again that that kind of experience is truly engrossing and it's jst soo fabulous mate. Keep up the good work. Cheers!!! Aash.

Just viewed every shot..read every word..a truly fantastic story/gallery that not many will ever be able or get the chance to do...Your Dad is a brave and confident man to take his kids on this journey..he knew he could and did!.. Anyone passing by certainly do look at this "Great Escape" gallery from start to finish.. Truly fantastic..

My parents now live on the boat again, it's their "retirement plan," same boat too. My brother is a professional crew and is working on his captian's license. I'd think about doing it again, but it is a huge amount of work and your heart really has to be in it for everything to come together. I'm not giving up sailing, but I'm also not dedicated enough to make it work for my family.

What a fascinating story. Few people are fortunate enough to have a life experience like this. It's nice to see the captions explaining the story that goes along with each image (and I'm glad the pirate encounter turned out well). Thank you for posting this, it was definitely worth the trouble to put this gallery together.

Wow, such an a-ma-zing experience! Such a breathtaking voyage around the world. So many cultures explored and met so many people. Crowds in cities, busy traffic situations, and then many lonely days out on the oceans seeing nothing but water and sky. Incredible! I bet no one can ever understand how special something like this is. No matter how many pictures or stories you ahare with other people, they'll never understand what it really was like. They will come close though. That's why I love and appraciate it so much that you put these images online along with the text so I have been 'part' of the trip a little bit as well;) Super family-experience! Actually I've never heard something like this before but I'm impressed. I'm sure the family gets a very strong and special bond together after doing something like this!
