I am writing this description on 18 October, so almost two weeks after the shot was taken. Looking back, I can see that this spring season has been distinctly bipolar. One day will be warm and clear and sunny (like yesterday, and like the day I took this shot) and the next will be grey and drizzling rain (like the day I'm writing this description).
On the sunny days, these flowers in my garden explode in colour. When evening arrives, the petals close in on themselves, but as soon as the sun comes out, they open wide.
If I can trust the "LeafSnap" application that I used to identify the plant, they are "Delosperma Cooperi", also known as the "Hardy Iceplant", also known as the pink carpet for reasons that should be obvious from this photo. The plant is native to South Africa, but a lot of South African plants can grow very well in the similar climate of parts of Australia.
Unfortunately they tend to be transient. Two weeks later, the petals are extensively withered. It will be interesting to see how they go as we move into summer.
