It was a mighty effort by Chris Smalling and his possibly now aching head, but as you can tell from his outstretched arm (which seems to gesture "come back!"), the ball flew harmlessly over the goal possibly to the relief of Milan goalkeeper Lapo Nava. (Although he probably had a better than even chance of blocking that one had it been on target.)

Most of the AC Milan backline seems to visibly relax at the outcome.
