The Milan starting goalkeeper for the night was #57, the 32 year old Marco Sportiello. Here we see him warming up with both interceptions and clearance kicks.
He's normally their second choice goalkeeper, the first choice being 28 year old Mike Maignan. (2,609 minutes in 29 of 38 matches this season.) He did not come to Perth. Sportiello in comparison played 630 minutes in 7 of 38 matches.
What about the other two matches? Milan has 4 goalkeepers on their roster. The third one is the young and inexperienced Lapo Nava, who we will see a bunch more of later. He did play in 1 match, but only for 2 minutes.
No, the other two matches featured their third choice goalkeeper Antonio Mirante, who was also not in Australia. "That name sounds familiar", says Romanistas everywhere. Yes, he used to be one of ours, though through his career he's been one of damn near everyone's at one time or another. He was with us from 2018 to 2021. While goalkeepers tend to be more long lived than most roles on the pitch, he turns 41 in July this year. That is pushing the boundaries a bit. But I digress.
But back to Signore Sportiello; he was born in Lombardia, making him a local(ish) boy, he's 192cm (a bit over 6'3") and 87kg. I say "local-ish" because he's only been with AC Milan since 2023. However his prior Serie A experience was with another Lombardo team, Atalanta. At 32 and with only 7 matches in a season under his belt it's questionable whether he will ever make it as first choice keeper now...but he's certainly more than capable.
