Once through the Porta San Francesco, I'm looking back to the south-east. The road to the left is the Via Fontebella, and where it curves away we can see the Hotel Giotto. (That road runs behind me as well and swings up the hill to the Basilica, which is indeed the path that we were about to follow. However the name changes to Via Frate Elia after this intersection.)
The road to the right is the Piaggia di Porta San Pietro, which leads down to the Piazza San Pietro and the church / abbey of that name seen in image 1999.
In the centre we see a building that is clearly owned by or occupied by someone whose faith runs deep, though in reality it's quite an attractive mural regardless of subject.
The subject is of course Mary and Jesus, given the caption which translates (loosely) as "Saint Mary, Mother of God, pray for we sinners now and at the hour of our death".
The building was clearly a shop at some point from all the stickers for Visa, Mastercard etc on it, but it seemed to be closed by the time I took this shot. It wasn't; Google Street View passed there the following month (September 2016) as well as in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Both before and after you could see a whole lot of souvenirs were available for sale, and there was (until the 2017 pass) a Kodak sign hanging on the right hand side of the door, although it appeared to be removable and must have been taken in when the store was closed as it was in my shot.
But the time of Kodak signs being a fixture in tourism sites has gone, and shall never come again.
Spoiler alert; there will be another, quite different shot taken from this spot; that will be image 2046.
