This is a more zoomed in view of the Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi (Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi) which we saw back in shot 1996.
This was intended to be the main focus of the stop here.
Construction of the basilica was begun in 1228, the year that St Francis was canonised, and 2 years after his death in 1226. (Which is, one must admit, a pretty impressive rate for going from being a human priest, to being a celestial saint.)
It's built into the side of the hill. As you can see from this shot, there is more than one level to the building. There are two churches, the upper and the lower, as well as a crypt where the remains of St Francis are interred. The Upper and Lower Churches are decorated with frescoes by artists like Cimabue and Giotto.
Do I have any shots of those? I do not, but we'll come back to that.
