One thing that you can't miss about the Colosseum is the number of arches that were created in the course of its construction.
Arches supported each of the individual seating levels, and arches provided the passageways (delightfully named vomitoria) that moved large volumes of people in and out of the amphitheatre.
Here we see but one example of that.
