This isn't so much a dock any more; at the beginning of the 20th century land was reclaimed to form the smaller Victoria Dock, which would be about 300m to the west north west behind me. In this shot I had continued along Hunter Street, roughly ESE until I reached close to what is now the cruise ship terminal, and am looking across to one of the marinas, The river Derwent flows to the sea in the background.
Fisherman's Dock was originally built in the 1840s to serve as the home of Hobart's fishing fleet. At its peak more than 100 boats operated out of here. As late as the 1920s boats were still selling fish directly from the wharf.
In this case we see the vessel "Storm Boy" pointing out toward the Derwent River, but protected at the front by a concrete barrier which is part of the marina that it's berthed at. The water was a little choppy that day but given how open this bay is to the Southern Ocean (the Derwent is over 4km wide between here and the sea) I suspect that it can get far worse than this.
