The original fountain was constructed in 1342 but underwent a major refurbishment (including the decorative frame) in 1419. The marble panels were essentially replaced with copies in 1858.

The statues are based on religious iconography. The pigeons are based on turning up on any statuary, anywhere, any time.

And the circles in the water from the wolf fountains flow outward forever.
