160910_151525_2657 Stage 3; Into Svizzera (Sat 10 Sep 16 (3))

10 minutes north of Poschiavo, Switzerland

And so we switched trains to the Bernina Express to take us on a scenic tour through the alps up to the city of Chur. At Chur we changed for an express train to Zurich.

The Bernina Express is the best of trains, it is the worst of trains. It has comfortable leather seats, or at least it does in first class which is the carriage that we took. It supposedly has luggage storage at the end of the carriages which is actually "Oh, there's a bit of space over there". It has huge panoramic windows which not only afford you a big open view of the landscape beyond but make shooting through them (and if the light is wrong, even looking through them) damn near impossible without the internal reflections screwing the living heck out of everything. It is well serviced by a drinks cart which provides a good range of small drinks, each of which costs the equivalent of the national debt of a small country.

It is, however, an experience not to be missed if you have the chance. I can't be more precise about where we were; I extrapolated this from a combination of the last station sign that I saw and the time of this shot. At this point we were curving around the mountains on our way up. Thankfully, cruddy optics of the windows notwithstanding, I do have better images than this one, but this one summarises the journey. And that, of course, is the role of this gallery.

A great way to see the countryside...it looks stunning. I ignore the reflections, it's the only way :)

Great vantage point. Very beautiful curves. I like the elbow because it gives context to the image. V

I would enjoy this train journey through those winding valleys. You must have had a super holiday.

Certainly some spectacular scenery, and you did rather well considering the windows Alan!
