The inside of the old miner's hut (image 13935) is done out as a miner may have left it. This includes some of the culinary features, such as these cans. There was, of course, no Woolworths or Coles in the valley, not even a 7-11 so you had to stock up on provisions which had a reasonably long life. Golden Syrup is also known as Cocky's Joy in the Australian vernacular ("Cocky" in this case referring to a small farmer) precisely because it did offer such longevity, and was therefore a staple treat in farmhouses which were remote from a source of supplies.
The inside of the hut is very dark with the only light coming from the windows (and little enough of that during a thunderstorm) so I had to rely on the 40D's internal flash (which I don't think I've ever used before) to provide the lighting. (I certainly wasn't lugging the 430EX through the bush on the off chance that I'd need it...)
