050826_180301_0487 The Living Flame (Fri 26 Aug 05)

Yarra Promenade (Crown Casino), Southbank, Melbourne

The fact that this image dates from 2005, and that it's number 0487 from not the 40D, but the 300D, should tell you all that you need to know. Specifically, that it was from my very first trip to Melbourne, and that at that time I had pretty much no idea what I was doing photographically speaking. (As per the fact that I was still shooting .jpg rather than raw, and had the camera set to the sRGB colour space.)

Outside the Crown Casino on the southern bank of the Yarra River is a walkway. Along this walkway is a series of towers which periodically jet flames into the air. Perhaps these flames represent your fate should you elect to spend too long at the blackjack table?

Jets of water also shoot up along this walkway, as you can see on the left which I think I was using to counterbalance the crane on the right, compositionally speaking.

Edit, August 2024: You know, looking back at this now, from almost {sucks in breath} 20 years in the future, and I want those 20 years back but I digress... I don't think I did an exceptionally bad job here. Granted, ISO 100 was ridiculous, the lens was primordial (but I didn't know that at the time), and the colour space and file type were sub-optimal choices, and it seems that I was on {eye roll} auto exposure mode, but the result was... surprisingly good considering, if I do say so myself.

Addendum: My personal opinion is that Facebook is a sociopathic organisation that steals other peoples' intellectual property (including the images in this gallery) despite being explicitly denied permission to do so.
