20101204_12411 Cycleways and Camera Shops (Sat 04 Dec)

Kent Street, Sydney

The City Of Sydney, in its wisdom, has been giving over a reasonable chunk of road space to cycle ways in the Central Business District. This one has only just finished construction, and is awaiting opening. Personally, I have some doubts about their effectiveness. It may help curb the traffic resulting from an increase in residential population in the city as a result of urban redevelopment, but realistically if you can afford the sort of prices that you need to pay to live in the CBD you probably aren't going to be the type who hops on a bicycle to go to the corner shops. And for people who don't live in the centre, Sydney's just too broad and too hilly and there are still going to be far too many gaps in the cycleway network for them to consider riding in regularly. Unfortunately state governments no longer look beyond the next election cycle and the sort of innovations that re needed (heavy rail to the growing north-west, to name the most obvious, very fast rail corridors which would enable Newcastle and Wollongong to be "bedroom suburbs" for twosies) never get a leg up.

However I mention this in passing, because as much as I enjoy cycling recreationally I don't do it to commute. No, the reason that this shot was taken is that I had just picked up my 24-105 from the repair centre of the camera store on the right. This was one of the first test shots.

And if that lens ever needs another several hundred dollar repair? Sod it, I'll stick with the 28-135 and the Olympus until the rumoured 24-70 f/2.8 I.S. is released next year.

This is a cool shot - great colours and perspective. There's a big campaign going on in Dundalk about cycle lanes
at the moment. The Cycling Alliance aren't happy with the way the Council puts in most cycle lanes. ie - simply painting a line on the road. This is exactly what they want.

Great perspective. V
