100528_131510_5478 Feeding Time At The Zoo, Literally

Taronga Park Zoo, Mosman, Sydney

Unfortunately due to the ridiculously labyrinthine and impenetrable mass of road spaghetti that appears immediately north of the Harbour Bridge, we arrived 10 minutes later than intended and couldn't get a good spot for the elephant keeper talk. This shot shows four of the elephants (there's a baby behind the far one's legs) having a post-show munch.

Taronga's elephants are all Asiatic ones, either imported from Thailand after being made redundant from logging work, or born at the zoo as part of the breeding program. (Two have been born at the time of writing with another due in late 2010.) Both babies are male (Pathi Harn born 10-Mar-10 and Luk Chai born 4-Jul-09). All of the other elephants in this enclosure are females; Gung (Prawn, born in 2000), the single adult male, has his own bachelor pad down the road a little. The females were born between 1992 and 1999.

This was one of the first shots I took on the day and when I noticed that all was not well with the 24-105. The autofocus was all over the place and often didn't move at all and the quality was relatively poor, particularly with regard to sharpness. (This image has had an unsharp mask applied.)
