6957 The Play On Words

Bourke St, Melbourne, VIC

Have you ever heard the Australianism "He's got Buckley's chance"? Want to know where it came from?

One, and to my mind the most likely, explanation came from a Melbourne department store which was established in 1851 by Mars Buckley, an Irish immigrant, and Crumpton Nunn, his English partner. Nunn of course is pronounced in the same way as "None", and thus a person who has no chance is said to have two; Buckley's and None. Or, more briefly, Buckley's.

This is one of several buildings that Buckley and Nunn operated out of in Bourke Street Melbourne. In 1982 it was bought by David Jones. Personally, and this is just me, I only go to David Jones if I want to pay an excessive amount of money for men's casualwear which is designed with all of the subtlety and style of a Mardi Gras, or for men's suits which are so stodgy that they make me think that I've fallen into a time warp leading to the 1950's. Indeed I rarely set foot in David Jones unless it's to use the facilities, and that's mainly for symbolic reasons. Can you tell that this is a company that I don't like very much? No? Well, as I said, that's just my own opinion. Don't let me stop you from shopping at this {cough} fine retail establishment.
