From what I've been able to gather this is a self-portrait of Mueck. Why "II"? Because there has been an earlier work. (Actually more than one, but one there was one from 1997 that was designated as the original "Mask". It featured an awake and frowning Mueck glowering at the viewer.)

Why "mask"? Take a look at shot 0092 and see for yourself.
