081213_141912_2763 Steam Amongst Sail

Dawes Point, Sydney, NSW

The 108' long, 165 ton coal-fired steam tug Waratah (1902) is surrounded by sailing vessels on a steamy December Saturday.

The Waratah (originally named Burunda) was built at the Cockatoo Island dockyard and was used to tow barges and dredges along the NSW coast. Acquired by the Sydney Heritage Fleet in 1968, she was rebuilt and is now the oldest tug in working order in Australia.

I would have liked to have had the sail boats grouped more closely together for this shot, but alas I got there just a fraction late. Hmm, a UV filter may not have gone astray either...
