The Grand Canal

Viewing in 'Original' size recommended.

St Mark's Square, Venice, may be more famous, but the Grand Canal at the Rialto Bridge
is said to be the heart of Venice. The present bridge was finished in 1591.
It was more reliable than the many wooden bridges that had spanned the Grand Canal
in earlier times. Built on about 12,000 wooden pilings, they still support
the bridge more than 400 years later. Michelangelo and Palladio both made efforts
to get the design work, but a younger man - Antonio da Ponte - got the job.

This image duo, from successive exposures, taken from a 'vaporetto' or water taxi,
is again from Agfa CN17 - a troublesome-for-scanners non orange dye colour negative.
However, I feel that the doublet, with its unusual colour and stains, suits
the timelessness of the Grand Canal and The Rialto Bridge.

Nikon F2 and 24mm f2 Nikkor, with Agfa CN17 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

This should be hanging in a museum some where. Wonderful. The subdued color and composition are amazing. I find it interesting that a touch of the modern world seems to be intruding into each corner of an otherwise older time.

Very beautiful image! I do very much like the colors and rough nature of this film.
