What looks like rooms are grottos of various sizes where statues and frescos devoted to Buddhism were erected and painted. The grottos were dug into cemented coarse-grained alluvial sediment formation. Mud was used as plaster to create a smooth surface for the frescos and wood was mostly used as skeletal support before mud was formed for the “fleshy” part of the statues. These grottos are impressive now and one can only imagine how they looked liked during the glory days.
