I missed an important step in my last description: after resizing down, add noise, THEN resize back up... Perhaps all this resizing stuff could be circumvented by using Filter->Texture->Grain... instead. There is an option for 'clumped' grain...

Looking at the 'rain' test photo, I see perhaps a couple of adjustments to my process would be necessary. The grain is mostly visible in the midtones, so instead of inverting the mask, perhaps giving it some curves in the shape of an upside-down U. Also, the grain needs to be larger, so I tried copying the image over in a new file, then resized down to half size and back up, then copied it back into the original file as the grain layer, and added the before mentioned layer mask (the original image copied, upside-down U curves applied)...

OK, I can see what this is all about. I've downloaded LX1 pictures and played with them. Interestingly the grain is much more evident if converting to black and white through just pulling the saturation down to 0. When I tried converting using a gradient map (black to white gradient), the grain practically disappeared! Anyway, if this is about simulating black and white film-effects on digital photos, I had an idea once, spurred by a comment on a photo in CSLR-challenge 33:http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/38864471 I don't know if this will give you (Adal?, Ann?) what you're striving for, but you could give it a try ?

By the way I have tried 1600 in the past on the 20D and it is great, especially if slightly under exposed and then "developed" in RAW format....the old "pushing" of the film. However the problem is daylight work wide open becomes restricted...been playing in PS but never quite right though always better with grain...The first (rainy window and wall) looks the best in my opinion...a real Tri-X Pan feel to it.;-))

I have used those kind of sensors Kal. You can set iso 1600, then play with NR looking for the best combination of luminance/chrominance NR mix. Here's an example of how I tried to save an outdoors shot taken erroneously at iso 1600 I was getting out of a church and forgot the iso settings... http://www.pbase.com/adalberto_tiburzi/image/28513723 (300D + kit lens) ;-)) A

Des tests, prétextes à de très beaux exercices de composition, de tonalités et de lumières. Trés belles images jusqu'à maintenant (2 photos, le 17 septembre, heure de l'est)
