+ When Mary & I reflected on this wonderful trip soon after getting home we both concluded that we loved Prague and liked Vienna. We loved getting around the city on the trams which get you to most of the popular sites. We loved the Vitova River winding its way through the city. Walking acroos the river on the pedestrian-only Charles Bridge was a delight. The architecture of many, many buildings is outstanding. The huge castle overlooking the city adds to the scenic setting as do the nearby hills surrounding the city.
Prague's history is fascinating and there were many sites where we could learn about it. It wasn’t that long ago that Prague was about one-third Czech, one-third, German and one-third Jewish. For many years it was under Habsburg rule. The Jewish quarter is very special with preserved or rebuilt synagogues, a big cemetery and an informative museum. Some historical highlights include the birth of the Czech nation in the tenth century under Wenceslaus who became a Saint, the era of the 14th century martyr Jan Hus who preached and led much like Martin Luther did a century later, the music heritage of the city, and the spiritual and political revolutions of the twentieth century.
We stayed at the Hotel Julian for six nights. We consider it one of the best hotels we ever stayed at for many reasons including the wonderful staff, the great variety at buffet breakfast, the antiques and paintings, the public spaces, the location in Lessertown near a tram stop and the river and restaurants and markets.
