Notre Dame - Fluctua Nec Mergitur (with Fahd Sultanem's participation)

English:
The flag of Paris has the expression “Fluctuat nec Mergitur”. It means that “She (a boat) is rocked (by the waves) but does not sink”. That is our feeling about what happened - and will happen - to Notre Dame Cathedral in April 15th 2019. We are confident that will be renewed and present for many future generations.
The fire of Notre Dame Cathedral was a shocking and unexpected event. This gothic church – as the Arc de Triomphe, the Tour Eiffel, the Musée du Louvre and some others - is one of the monuments personalizing Paris. Sad images ….. the beauty of its roof and the “flèche” destroyed by the fire. I am not a religious man but this cathedral is much more than a catholic monument. It represents the overwhelming effort of French people – already working on it in the 12th century – to build an immense and magnificent monument at the time when France had limited and relatively small richness and the majority of people were poor farmers. By the international reactions, one could say and feel that Notre Dame belongs to the entire France and the humanity.
I was living in France in the late 1970s and I pictured the cathedral in 1979. Watching these terrible fire images, I looked for my old slides (Kodachrome) and scanned them. I was using, in that time, an Olympus OM2n camera with a Zuiko 21mm/3.5 and a Tokina 80-200mm/4 zoom; the majority of photos were taken with this gear. Some few other pictures are added in the folder. Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of the interior of the church since I was mostly interested by the cathedral inserted in the context of the town. However, Fahd Sultanem - an old friend and photographer too - kindly sent me some pictures including some from the interior of Notre Dame, which are present in the folder. Lattely (July 2019), some pictures showing the reconstruction works were added.
Well …. let us hope that Notre Dame will be quickly rebuild (it seems that the main structure is preserved) and we could visit it again very soon. Fluctuat nec Mergitur.
