Visiting George Eastman's house, Kodak's founder, at Rochester, NY (slides from 2001)

George Eastman (1854-1932) was the founder of Eastman Kodak Company in 1884. For so many of us, this company was of crucial importance, since we used its excellent films; mentioning only a few: Plus-X (125 ISO), Tri-X (400 ISO), T-Max (100 and 400 ISO) e Kodachrome (25, 64 and 200 ISO). Eastman, observing how complex was the photographic process, had the idea of using roll films, simplifying the technique. In parallel, simple cameras were manufactured and the photography was therefore accessible to the public. An immediate and immense success. For decades, Kodak was the largest company in this business. As for this gallery, when I lived in the USA (2000-2001) on our way to Canada, we passed by Rochester and visited Eastman's house, a typical mansion of great American industrialists of that time. A curiosity: George Eastman disliked the shape of the living room; in a complex and very expensive work, the house was suspended and slid in order to be on 'ideal' proportions. Another curiosity: Kodak is a commercial name without any meaning; it was chosen because it could be spelled and spoken easily in all languages. In the two last years of his life he suffered of strong spine pains and commited suicide shooting in his heart and leaving a short note: "To my friends, my work is done – Why wait? GE". He is buried in the grounds of the company he founded.
