Crossing the Andes Mountains: from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama

After our stay in Salta, we drove to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. For doing so, we took the roads 52 (Argentina) and 27 (Chile), passing by Purmamarca and Susques (still in Argentina). After Purmamarca, the altitude increased considerably (from 1200 to 4700 meters). Car engines suffer from it since part of power is lost. At some point we got to the 'altiplano', flat high Andes area. Next to the road, the amazing 'salars' are present, in Argentina and Chile as well. The region is dry and has little vegetation. We could see some 'vicuñas', a cousin of the lhamas. Only relatively close to San Pedro de Atacama (70 km), the altitude goes down to 2400 meters, the town level. This trip was 560 km long and a great moment of our travel.
