VDO 10K Mechanical Tachometer Magnetic - #1

DATE CODE: 3.77 https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/164476705

No, it's not a 917 tachometer and yes, I'm aware this is NOT a 914-6 GT part either, but one can't deny it will look very cool installed in the instrument cluster of a 914-6 GT. I do have a couple of Mechanical Tach-Drives https://pbase.com/9146gt/my9146gt_30rsr_engine_mechanical_tach_drive to connect it all together, just missing the long drive cable which can be easily custom-made to order. The VDO gauge is now restored and calibrated.

Magnetic Movement A more simpler movement with minimal moving parts, less expensive to produce and usually very reliable. The mechanical cable attached to the cam tach-drive gearbox turns an internal magnet with a strong magnetic field inside the can of the VDO gauge. As the magnet spins inside the can, it turns or deflects the tachometer RPM indicator needle. There is a physical mechanical connection between the cable drive mechanism and the magnet, but not with the needle itself. These gauges come in both 1:2 and 1:4 gear ratios.

Chronometric Movement / Smiths Instruments https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/141977950 A more complicated gear-driven movement, much like a chronograph wrist watch, originally developed by Smiths in England. Very popular with Porsche and BMW race cars in the late 60s to early 70s. The movement and cable threaded connection is usually located off-center in back of the gauge https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/141977952. The RPM needle does not float, it is incremented by the complex gear mechanism much in the same basic way as the 'seconds needle' moves in a watch. These gauges come in both 1:2 and 1:4 gear ratios.
