Last October, in 2008, I went back to visit in-laws in Korat and twisted the arm of a friend and visited the `ole haunt.
What you will see for the most part is self explanatory. We handlers would shake our lazy butts out of the bunk and walk across the road and up the kennel road. Where the two met is where the pictures start. The Thai airmen haven't kept it up as good as we did but it's also been 38 years.
Pics 1 and 2 are the sign and statue at the corner of the kennel road.
Pic 3 is of the current kennel master. He was a little perplexed when one of his airmen told him there was some Falong nosing around the kennels. But after he knew why I was there, he kind of warmed up for a little tour.
Pics 4, 5, 6, & 7 are of the exercise yard as you walked out from between the two kennel buildings and then looked to the left and followed the obstacles around to the right.
Pic 8 is the rear of the active side of the two kennel buildings as if you were facing the building's rear.
Pic 9 is the active kennel area. They are not using the other side of the kennels. In this section, they keep the aggressive dogs.
Pic 10 is from the road looking at the left building which is no longer being used. It still has all the chain link kennel dividers and the concrete walls and the chain link dividers and doors. From what I could see it would appear that everything removed from the one side was being stored in the other side. But .. the most interesting thing that caught my attention was the 4-5 dogs running free in the yard. If you look close you can see some of them.
Pic 11 & 12 is just a few information pics showing the downtown Korat area; not too far from the old bus station where we caught the bus to shuffle off to Goongteb. Because of the 8 lanes of traffic they built walk overs for obvious reasons. This walk over extends out from the mall in the next two shots.
Pic 13 & 14 show the top three floors of the mall. The bottom one is almost like a bazaar or flea market in the basement. Almost every store is a high end retailer not offering any prices too different than in the U.S. The only advantage is the current exchange rate which is about $1. = 35 baht. 14 is your average water falls inside a mall except when parents take their kids there they hold on to them. There is fish in there about 7-8 ft long and like to snatch anything that falls in the water.
Pics 15, 16, 17, & 18 are just a few some of the men might be interested in. 15 is a nice shot of you average gold store on the street. The exception today is now with the price as high as it's gotten there is an armed guard close to every one; 16 is the old Capital of Ayutthaya (circa: 550 yrs ago); 17 is a house I am "considering" for when I retire; 18 is our old stand by to get to our bungalow - the Samlar.
Pic 19 is a HUGE new Wat which is almost completed. It is about 20 klicks South of Korat on Friendship Hwy going towards Bangkok. A movie star, who when he was young and just getting started, vowed he’d build a temple to an honored monk. They started about 6 yrs ago. As you can see it is well landscaped and the structure itself is almost finished. As you drive along the road it is only about 300 meters off the highway so it does catch your eye. They expect to finish it in about another 2-3 years.
Pic 20 is what the Thai culture centers around
